by Seth "Soul Man" Ferranti
Born in the projects and bred in the hood, Mike Sanders is a product of his environment. He was born and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina where at an early age he was exposed to the streets and lifestyle that came with it. As a result, he’s spent 15 years of his adult life in penitentiaries around the country. While serving a 180-month federal sentence he penned his first novel Hustlin’ Backwards, which was published in 2004. His second novel, Snitch was published a year later. After serving 11 consecutive years inside the Belly of the Beast, he's finally free. His third novel, Thirsty is available now.
How did Thirsty come about?
Thirsty was originally a novel I had penned for my previous publisher but that deal fell through so I sat on it for a couple of years. I wrote Thirsty because I wanted to show the game from more than just one perspective. Once you read this novel you will see exactly what I mean. It also shows my growth and versatility as an author.
How did you get with WCP (Wahida Clark Presents)?
Wahida and I have known each other since 2004 before my first novel Hustlin’ Backwards was published. As you already know, she too was incarcerated so we could relate to a lot of issues. We had talked about working together in ’04 but it was hard with both of us being on lock. We kept in contact throughout the remainder of our bids and once she was released she started her own publishing company and brought me aboard. We came to an agreement and the rest is about to be history.
How’s it feel to be free?
Oh, man, it’s a beautiful thing! After being for 11 years, I’m finally able to move like I want to and I can’t wait to do my first book signing this month when Thirsty is released.
What have you been doing since your release?
I’ve been grinding, promoting this book and getting everything ready for my tour that’s coming up. I haven’t done much writing since I’ve been home but I’m about to go back into the lab soon and finish cranking out this next bestseller.
Are you still selling your first two books?
Hustlin’ Backwards and Snitch can only be found on Amazon.com right now. They will be re-published soon and will be available everywhere books are sold.
How are your fans reacting to meeting you in person?
It’s crazy! They show mad love! It’s amazing to see how many people have read and enjoyed my novels. Like I said, it’s a beautiful thing.
What’s next for Mike Sanders?
After Thirsty, I will drop another heater. I am also in talks with a film producer about Hustlin’ Backwards to the big screen. I’m excited about that. I want to start my own publishing company as well.
Explain your typical day?
My daily grind consists of utilizing every tool I have, mainly the web to market and self-promote my book. My publisher is doing a great job promoting but you already know there’s nothing like self-promotion. I’m handing out bookmarks, posters and flyers to everyone I see on the street. I’m trying to keep myself as visible and accessible as possible to the public, so I’m also making as many public appearances as I can.
Yeah, I want to let everyone know that Thirsty is available now. You can find it wherever books are sold. You won’t be disappointed! Thanks to all my readers for the support! I can be reached at: myspace.com/queencitysbest or firstname.lastname@example.org
